Acushla was born from the passion of a man, the strength of an emotion that would allow several generations from the same family to bond around the olive oil business. The olive tree, by its beauty, spirituality, resistance and longevity, has always fascinated Joaquim Moreira, a fashion and textile entrepreneur, who, having spent most of his professional life in big metropolis, decided to cherish an alternative project strictly connected with nature. The initiative to take this path came from the need to “temper” the everyday life with a business connected to the land and the slower rhythm that it determines. Acushla is a word of Celtic origin that means “beat of my heart”. The name choice arose from the search for a single expression able to translate the whole concept and emotion associated with this project which has materialized in 2006. It was in Quinta do Prado, Vila Flor, located in Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region, that Joaquim Moreira, after much effort in the study on areas with high potential for olive oil production in Portugal, found the ideal site for producing an outstanding olive oil. This estate, with 14 hectares of centenarian olive trees and 200 hectares of new olive trees, has in total approximately 70.000 olive trees. When maturity is reached the expected production of olive oil will be around 350.000 litres, making it one of the largest organic production areas in the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Being the environmental concern and sustainability one of the cornerstones of Acushla, we have elected organic farming, where the growth of the olive trees is conducted with the utmost respect for the established procedures of organic production, foreseen by the European and American legislation. This production includes the use of farming techniques that respect the natural life cycles and reduce environmental impact. It also leads to several slow and expensive procedures, mainly the maintenance of the fertilization of the soils and the respect for phytosanitary and fertilization principles; it is prohibited the use of chemical synthesis products.

Katsa Olive Oil
We started our active role in producing and selling olive oil in 1932 by planting our first olive grove in the fertile ground of Achaia Peloponnese (South West Greece). After War World II and having 13 years of experience we followed our upward track in producing olive oil and planting new olive trees. Katsa First Cold Pressed - Extra Virgin Olive Oil comes specifically from Koroneiki cultivar olive trees and it's highly praised for it's exquisite taste and texture. The harvest begins in early November when the fruit is still green and unripe. These olives have been proved to have the highest levels of antioxidants and polyphenols, essential to boost the immune system and to maintain a healthy balanced diet. An early harvest produces unripe olives which are pressed into ‘’agureleo’’ (early harvest olive oil) that is young and vibrant with strong flavour and very low acidity. This type of olive oil is mainly used in salads or eaten raw. A harvest from the same trees at a later stage will give us ‘’eleolado‘’ (mid harvest olive oil) which is smoother and more mellow with a milder flavour. This type of olive oil may be used in salads also but it is more generally suited to cooking and baking. The microclimate conditions, the sea breeze, the stony ground, the soil elements, the dry cultivation, the lack of any kind of industrial plants near the area and the long-aged trees allow us to produce excellent olive oil with unique characteristics, taste and nutritional ingredients. Vatsiko
Agricultural Cooperative, “Certified Quality Agricultural Products of Gargaliani”, called “ELEONAS”, consists of 150 members, who cultivate 105.000 olive trees in an area of 500 hectares. “ELEONAS’ is leaded by a 5-persons board. Our extra virgin olive oil “Vatsiko” comes from Gargaliani Messinias, and is produced by mechanical means from the variety “vatsiko”, which is our own way to call Koroneiki variety in Messinia region. Every single olive tree is cultivated under the system of Good practices and Environmental Management. The rational use of all cultivation means along with the application of a hygiene and traceability system in the process of flowering, fruiting, harvesting and extraction of oil from olive fruits. The collection and processing of olives is done on a single day, in order for the oil to be protected from temperature changes and rotting of the fruit after it is removed from the tree. The “VATSIKO” olive oil stands out for its rich, fruity and full flavor. The characteristic bitterness, which competes with the spicy flavor, brings the authentic flavor of the olive in every dish, along with the smells of nature and complex aromas, features which make our olive oil valuable.
